The strategic role of Data Centers in the digital age

In today’s digital economy, data is the true driver of innovation and competitiveness. Data Centers, which store, process, and distribute vast amounts of information, are the beating heart of this system, ensuring the operational continuity of companies, institutions, and essential services. However, the increasing concentration of technology and data in large-scale sites brings ever more complex challenges in terms of security, reliability, and energy management.

The project: advanced monitoring in a TIER IV Data Center

Kerberos was selected by a major Italian insurance player to design, produce, and install an integrated monitoring system at the Acilia Data Center (Rome), a facility classified as TIER IV according to the international TIA-942 standard. This level represents the highest degree of protection and security, even in the event of exceptional occurrences such as earthquakes or flooding.

Implemented solutions: comprehensive control and total security

The Kerberos X-MONITOR system was integrated with security and alarm tools, ensuring:

• Monitoring of every power line: each rack has one to six power lines, ensuring maximum redundancy and reliability.
• Advanced sensors for each rack: installation of sensors for temperature, smoke/fire, flooding, and door opening/closing (front and rear), enabling environmental control and rapid detection of anomalies.
• Energy consumption analysis: each cabinet is individually monitored to identify potential waste and optimize energy efficiency.
• Dedicated network infrastructure: three KET-GZE-210.R gateways connect groups of 23 cabinets each, allowing data collection and processing in JSON format, viewable via an interactive map of each rack’s status.

Operational phases and customization

The project was completed rapidly: from the first requests for quotes in July, to site inspections in September, and the supply and installation of materials between November and December. Installation was carried out by specialized Kerberos technicians, with particular attention to customizing solutions based on the client’s specific needs. Devices used included Smart Supervisors KET-RKS-100, single-phase and three-phase power meters, smoke sensors (KET-RKF-100), flood sensors (KET-RKA-100), temperature sensors (KET-RKT-100), and rack door sensors (KET-RKP-100).

Results: efficiency, security, and operational continuity

Thanks to Kerberos’ intervention, the Data Center achieved:

• Optimization of energy consumption
• Continuous and real-time monitoring
• Maximum security in line with TIER IV requirements
• Guaranteed operational continuity even in critical situations

Results
